Ukraine's president said Russia fired 70 missiles and drones overnight, hitting energy sites and killing at least 11 people, a higher toll than earlier Kyiv reports of two deaths.

President Volodymyr Zelenskiy said on Wednesday that Russia fired 70 missiles and drones in one of its largest strikes of the war, killing at least 11 people and aiming at Ukraine's energy system. Reuters reported the toll from Kyiv.

Zelenskiy wrote on Telegram that energy infrastructure was a key target and that Russia wanted the strike to be painful and demonstrative. He said ballistic missiles remain the hardest threat and that air-defence packages are a vital necessity.

Russia's defence ministry said its forces carried out a massive strike on military-industrial facilities in Kyiv and other regions, using land-, sea- and air-launched weapons and drones. It named sites it said were linked to Fire Point production and storage of Flamingo cruise missiles and drones, and said strikes also hit port and ship-repair infrastructure and vessels in the Odesa region.

An earlier Reuters report on Wednesday said two people were killed in Kyiv after a strike set fire to a garage cooperative, according to Mayor Vitali Klitschko. The later presidential figure of at least 11 dead is the updated national toll, not a separate incident.

The ministry's account and Zelenskiy's account describe the same overnight barrage from opposite sides. Neither Reuters dispatch published an independent damage survey.
