Moscow's mayor said Ukraine launched more than 650 drones toward the capital overnight. Regional officials said two people were killed and homes were damaged.
Ukrainian drones killed two people overnight in one of the largest attacks of the war on Moscow and the surrounding region, Russian officials said on Tuesday. Mayor Sergei Sobyanin said Ukraine launched more than 650 drones toward the capital and that most were shot down.
Moscow region governor Andrei Vorobyov said 185 drones were destroyed or brought down over his region. Reuters initially quoted him as saying seven people were injured and that 47 houses, four apartments and three cars were damaged. The Moscow Times later quoted Vorobyov as saying nine people were injured and that 47 private homes and four apartment buildings were damaged across seven municipalities. The two accounts agree on the two deaths.
Reuters said the dead were a 71-year-old man pulled from the rubble of a house and a 20-year-old man killed in a nearby village. The Moscow Times identified the younger man as a resident of Radumlya in the Solnechnogorsk district and the older man as recovered in Barybino.
War bloggers and the exiled outlet Astra reported a fire at the Volodarskaya oil storage site, which they described as the region's largest fuel hub and a Transneft facility supplying Moscow's main airports. The Moscow Times said it could not independently verify that report. Reuters attributed the depot claim to military bloggers, including Yuri Podolyaka.
Russia has intensified strikes on Kyiv in recent weeks, Reuters noted. Ukrainian officials have separately claimed long-range strikes have hit a large share of Russian refining capacity. Moscow had not published a full damage assessment of the Volodarskaya site by the time of the Tuesday reports.
