A regional governor said nine people were taken to hospital and none was in a life-threatening condition. Police detained a 19-year-old student. Prosecutors said a homemade device was found in his backpack.

Ten people were injured in a knife attack at a school in Ostroleka in northeastern Poland on Wednesday, Reuters reported. Masovian regional governor Mariusz Frankowski said nine people had been taken to hospital and that none was in a life-threatening condition.

He said the injured included five students, two teachers and two bystanders, as well as the attacker, who had harmed himself. Police said the suspect was a 19-year-old student at the school and that he had attacked people with a machete. He was detained shortly after the incident and was among those hurt.

National prosecutor Dariusz Korneluk told TVN24 that a homemade explosive device that nearly detonated was found in the attacker's backpack. Bomb disposal experts were called to the scene.

The account rests on the governor, police and the prosecutor. No charges were detailed in the Reuters report beyond the detention.

The injured were in hospital. No further court date was included.
