Police arrested an 18-year-old after a car struck fans lining streets in Wallsend for a Newcastle Knights send-off, injuring 10 people, two of them critically.

Ten people were injured when a man drove into a crowd in Newcastle on Saturday after appearing to lose control of the car, authorities told Reuters. The incident happened in Wallsend, about 110 kilometres north of Sydney.

An 18-year-old driver was arrested at the scene. Fans had lined local streets to send off the Newcastle Knights rugby league team before the National Rugby League grand final in Sydney on Sunday.

Two of those taken to hospital, a 5-year-old girl and a 67-year-old man, were in a critical condition, authorities said. Newcastle Mayor Gavin Morris said the driver seemed to have lost control and that it appeared he had been revving the car.

Police said initial indications suggested the incident was not terrorism-related. Reuters reported the account from authorities in Sydney and Newcastle.

The crash interrupted a public send-off for the Knights and left the condition of the two critically injured people as the immediate concern for local officials.
