Saudi Arabia's civil aviation authority said three Saudi nationals were killed and several people injured in two attacks on King Khalid International Airport in Riyadh on Thursday. The Houthis claimed the airport strike.

Saudi Arabia's General Authority of Civil Aviation said on Friday that three Saudi nationals were killed and several people were injured in two attacks on King Khalid International Airport in Riyadh on Thursday. Reuters published the authority's statement without naming a perpetrator.

The Associated Press reported that the first attack targeted airport facilities and the second struck a Saudia aircraft. The authority did not identify those responsible. The AP said Iran-backed Houthi rebels in Yemen claimed to have targeted the airport.

A separate Reuters report on Thursday, citing three people briefed on the matter, said shrapnel from an interception or another projectile left a Saudia plane heavily damaged after it caught fire while parked at a terminal. The Houthis said they had struck Riyadh airport and warned workers to stay away from energy plants.

Saudi authorities had said on Wednesday that three people were killed this week in strikes on Riyadh airport and Abha airport, Reuters reported. Friday's aviation-authority statement is the official count for the Thursday Riyadh attacks.

The death toll is an official Saudi figure. The claim of responsibility is the Houthis' own statement, not a finding by the aviation authority.
