Russia hit Ukraine with missiles and drones overnight into Wednesday, killing at least 25 people, President Volodymyr Zelenskiy said. Interior Minister Ivan Vyhivskyi later put the death toll at 28, Reuters reported from Kyiv.
The heaviest loss was in Pryluky, in the Chernihiv region, where a missile destroyed a five-storey residential building. Zelenskiy said 19 people died there, including five children. He said civilians were also killed in Kyiv and in Oleksandria and Kremenchuk, and that about 100 people were injured nationwide.
Zelenskiy said Russia fired 70 missiles, many of them ballistic, and dozens of Shahed drones. He said energy infrastructure was a principal target and called the barrage one of the most vile strikes, noting that it coincided with Putin's birthday.
Russia's defence ministry described the operation as a strike on military-industrial facilities, missile and drone production, port infrastructure and vessels it said supported Ukraine's forces. Reuters did not independently reconcile the two accounts of what was hit.
Rescue work was still under way when the later toll was given. No ceasefire or new mediation date was announced with the casualty update.
