A Russian drone struck Kyiv's Pivnichnyi Bridge on Sunday, injuring two people, the latest in four days of attacks on Dnipro crossings. German Chancellor Friedrich Merz arrived in the capital on a surprise visit.
Major bridges in Kyiv have been hit by Russian drones for a fourth straight day, BBC News reported on Sunday. Two people were injured when the Pivnichnyi, or Northern, Bridge was struck again on Sunday morning. The Pivdennyi, or Southern, Bridge was hit several times earlier in the week.
BBC journalists said they verified video of cars moving on the Northern Bridge as a drone struck and exploded. Other images showed a hole in a traffic lane. Mayor Vitali Klitschko said two people were injured in the latest attack.
Russia's military said it would intensify strikes on Kyiv and other regions and said it had hit bridges used to move Ukrainian troops. Moscow has again urged foreign citizens, including diplomats, to leave the capital. The two Dnipro bridges link the western and eastern sides of Kyiv and had not been hit before Thursday, the BBC reported.
The Sunday strike coincided with a surprise visit by German Chancellor Friedrich Merz, which the BBC described as a show of support during Russia's full-scale invasion. No joint statement from Merz and Ukrainian officials was included in the BBC account used here.
Traffic on the Northern Bridge had already been disrupted after Saturday's strike, when Klitschko said the road surface and trolleybus wires were damaged and movement from the left bank to the right bank was blocked.
