Both sides confirmed on Tuesday that a localized ceasefire has taken effect in the Russian-occupied town of Oleshky to allow aid deliveries and civilian evacuations, while fighting continues elsewhere including in Kyiv.

Russia and Ukraine began a localized ceasefire early on Tuesday in the Russian-occupied town of Oleshky, both sides confirmed, to enable humanitarian aid deliveries and preparations for civilian evacuations.

Russia's defence ministry said on Telegram that it stopped shelling in the direction of Kherson from 4 a.m. Moscow time (0100 GMT) to prepare for the operation in Oleshky, which sits across the Dnipro River from Ukrainian-held Kherson.

Ukraine's human rights ombudsman Dmytro Lubinets confirmed in a Facebook post that the Ukrainian side is honouring its commitments and that the ceasefire started at the same time.

The truce was brokered by US First Lady Melania Trump and announced last Friday; it aims to address acute shortages of food and medicine for the roughly 1,700 to 2,000 residents remaining in the town.

Reuters and Al Jazeera report that both sides continue strikes elsewhere, including new attacks on Kyiv's Southern Bridge and subway infrastructure on Tuesday.

The agreement allows for demining and the establishment of a safe corridor; next peace talks are set for November.
