Sinaloa's security secretariat said a Thursday riot at El Castillo penitentiary in Mazatlan killed nine inmates and one visitor and injured 16 prisoners.

A riot during family visiting hours on Thursday at El Castillo penitentiary in Mazatlan killed nine inmates and one visitor, Sinaloa's Public Security Secretariat said, the Associated Press reported. Sixteen prisoners were taken for medical treatment.

The prison holds about 1,800 inmates. Local media reported that inmates used firearms; authorities had not said how the deaths occurred, AP reported. Army, National Guard, navy and state forces entered the prison after the clash. Mexico's federal security cabinet said the facility was under control.

Reuters, citing the state security office, reported the same toll and said prosecutors will investigate the cause. The office said the prison was under control.

Neither report named suspects or described a motive. AP's headline referred to cartel violence in the state; the body of the AP account did not attribute the riot to a named group.

No later casualty revision was included in these reports.
