South Korea's military said North Korea launched a ballistic missile from the Wonsan area around 6:30 a.m. Saturday. Japan's Defense Ministry said it flew about 680 kilometers and landed outside Japan's exclusive economic zone.

North Korea launched a ballistic missile toward the Sea of Japan on Saturday, the South Korean military said. Kyodo News reported the launch from an area around Wonsan in Kangwon Province at about 6:30 a.m.

Japan's Defense Ministry said the missile flew about 680 kilometers before landing in waters outside Japan's exclusive economic zone. Seoul described the projectile as a ballistic missile.

Kyodo placed the launch after a dispute between Pyongyang and Seoul set off by landmine blasts. The digest did not give further detail on that dispute or on the missile type.

Reuters has also reported South Korean and Japanese accounts of a North Korean projectile fired toward the sea off the east coast. Saturday's military statements are the basis for the range and launch-area figures.

Neither Seoul nor Tokyo, in the Kyodo account, reported damage or casualties. The landing area was described as outside Japan's EEZ.
