The external affairs ministry condemned a strike on the Panama-flagged MT On Peace off Oman and said 11 of 17 Indian crew members were among 12 people injured.
India's Ministry of External Affairs said a projectile struck the Panama-flagged tanker MT On Peace, IMO 9893204, off Oman on Tuesday while it was transiting the Strait of Hormuz, The Wire reported. The ministry condemned the attack and called for an end to strikes on commercial shipping.
The vessel had 19 crew, 17 of them Indian. Twelve people were injured, including 11 Indians, the ministry said. Firstpost reported that the injured were evacuated with Omani help and taken to Khasab for treatment.
The Wire said the incident adds to a toll of Indian seafarers killed or hurt in attacks around Hormuz since the regional war began in February. It put deaths since then at about a dozen and injuries at more than 20, citing the pattern of earlier attacks rather than a new official tally for Tuesday alone.
New Delhi did not name the party that fired the projectile. The statement asked that navigation through international waterways be restored.
No further casualty update was in the ministry wording quoted on Wednesday morning.
