Reuters reported that Houthi fire this week killed three people at Saudi airports and that a parked Saudia jet caught fire on Thursday. Syria is considering military help against the Houthis.
Yemen's Houthis escalated strikes on Saudi Arabia this week, and shrapnel or another projectile left a parked Saudia jet heavily damaged after it caught fire at an airport terminal on Thursday, three people briefed on the matter told Reuters. The group said it had struck Riyadh airport and warned workers to stay away from energy plants.
Saudi civil aviation said attacks on King Khalid International Airport in Riyadh and Abha airport killed three people and wounded 36, Dawn reported. It said Egyptian and Algerian nationals were killed at Abha and a Sudanese national at Riyadh. Houthi spokesman Yahya Saree said the group had fired a ballistic missile at the Riyadh airport and also targeted King Khalid Air Base in Khamis Mushait.
Reuters reported that Saudi authorities have asked allies, including Turkey and Pakistan, for support, even if only logistical or defensive, as they try to reverse Houthi gains in southwest Yemen near the southern entrance to the Red Sea. The same report said Syria is considering both defensive and offensive military aid.
Fighting was still under way on Yemen's front lines, Reuters said. A Saudi-led coalition later said it had destroyed the launcher used against Riyadh airport, Dawn reported.
The casualty figures are those given by Saudi civil aviation. Reuters attributed the aircraft-damage account to people briefed on the incident, not to a published airline statement.
