Ukrainian authorities said a Russian bomb killed at least 33 people and wounded 18 in Kramatorsk, on a street where two city buses were operating. Moscow had not commented in the reports.

Ukrainian authorities said a Russian bomb attack on Kramatorsk killed at least 33 people and wounded 18 on Thursday. Reuters reported the strike as one of the largest single attacks this year in the eastern city, a Donetsk stronghold still sought by Moscow. Police said it hit a street where two city buses were operating. President Volodymyr Zelenskyy described the site as a bus stop.

Al Jazeera, citing police, said the buses were hit with a glide bomb. The local prosecutor's office posted photographs of bodies and debris in front of the burned shell of a bus, Al Jazeera reported. Regional governor Vadym Filashkin wrote on Telegram that a bus with passengers was an attractive target because one strike could kill many people.

Filashkin said he had ordered authorities in Kramatorsk and Sloviansk to halt public transport, saying they had no right to risk citizens' lives, Reuters reported. Kramatorsk's city council called the strike a crime against civilians and said there were no military targets at the location.

Reuters said there was no immediate comment from Moscow. Russia denies targeting civilians, while it has regularly struck Ukrainian cities since the full-scale invasion began in February 2022. Officials said Moscow has stepped up drone and guided-bomb strikes on the fortress belt in Donetsk.

The casualty figures are those given by local authorities on Thursday. They are not an independent forensic count.
