President Lee Jae Myung said AI models were used in cyber attacks on banks, as South Korea investigates intrusions at financial institutions.

President Lee Jae Myung said artificial-intelligence models were used in cyber attacks on banks, the Financial Times reported on Tuesday. The paper said he highlighted public anxiety over what one official called a completely new kind of crisis.

WION separately reported that South Korea has opened an investigation into cyber attacks on financial institutions amid concern that AI may have been used. Named victim banks, ransom demands and attribution to a specific group were not in the texts used here.

The Kospi was lower on Tuesday, with Samsung Electronics and SK Hynix down, AP reported. Those share moves were not explicitly tied by AP to the cyber investigation.

OpenAI’s separate apology over an Australian government website incident is a different AI-security event and is not treated as the same intrusion.

Investigators have not, in these reports, published a technical indicator of compromise or a confirmed suspect.
