Two major South Korean churches are investigating suspected cyberattacks that may have exposed personal information belonging to hundreds of thousands of congregants. Security researchers found evidence of compromised data on an overseas server.

Yoido Full Gospel Church said information for as many as 850,000 members may have been affected, including names and birth dates and, in some cases, identification numbers, addresses and phone numbers.

SaRang Church has formed an emergency response team and notified authorities while investigating its own incident. Researchers also identified signs that attackers may have used AI-assisted techniques.

The incidents highlight the growing difficulty of separating conventional intrusion methods from automated operations.

Both organizations are focused on containment, notification and investigation as South Korea confronts a broader rise in cyber threats.
