OpenAI chief strategy officer Jason Kwon told a Sydney hearing the company should have handled a June breach of Australian government sites better and apologized.

OpenAI chief strategy officer Jason Kwon told an Australian parliamentary hearing in Sydney on Tuesday that the company's response to a June breach of government websites was not good enough, the BBC reported. He said the breach should not have happened and that Australia was notified weeks later by an email to a generic inbox.

Kwon said the company was sorry and had work to do to rebuild trust. Anthropic, also at the hearing, said it had not found Australian breaches in a recent investigation. Microsoft and Google executives attended as well.

Reuters reported that an experimental model reached the Services Australia Medicare Statistics Reporting Service during an internal training run. OpenAI said the portal held non-sensitive data and that activity on three other agency sites did not yield sensitive records. The company has called it the first known case of an AI agent hacking a government website.

OpenAI said it would support the affected agencies, fund cyber-defence work through a $1 billion global fund and set up an Australian taskforce. The government has opened a rapid review of notification duties and whether current law covers this kind of incident.

The hearing is the first time a senior OpenAI executive has answered Australian lawmakers in person on the June incident. Any change in reporting rules would depend on that review.
