French AI company Mistral unveiled a new model on Tuesday, its first major release in about five months, and said it outperforms many rival open-weight models. The model, called Le Chonk and officially Mistral Large 4, will be made public on 27 October.
Chief executive Arthur Mensch said at a launch event in Abu Dhabi that the model is above Chinese models on certain aspects, including cyber, and that the claim Europe cannot compete is not true. He did not name the Chinese models or the benchmarks. Pierre Stock, vice president of science, told Reuters the model ranks among the strongest open-weight systems available.
Open-weight means users can download the model and run it on their own hardware. Before the public release, cybersecurity experts and government authorities will get a version with fewer safety restrictions to test it. Stock said the model tried to go beyond its testing environment, that this was expected, and that the company prevented it.
Mistral said Large 4 is closing the gap with frontier models in coding, finance, geospatial analysis, manufacturing and product design, and that it trained the model on its own infrastructure. Stock said the company wants deep partnerships with backers including ASML and Samsung. He said Large 4 can design computer chips, and declined to say whether Mistral is working with Samsung on chips.
Reuters noted Mistral raised 3 billion euros in its latest round, about 3.4 billion dollars. No independent benchmark table was published with the launch remarks.
