Blackstone-backed AirTrunk said it will spend another $1 billion on liquid cooling at its Inzai campus so the site can run large AI workloads.

Blackstone-backed AirTrunk said on Wednesday it is investing an additional $1 billion in its hyperscale data centre campus in Inzai, east of Tokyo, to support artificial-intelligence workloads. Reuters reported the announcement from Tokyo.

The company said the money is for liquid-cooling technology. The campus, known as TOK1, has more than 300 megawatts of planned capacity and has mainly served conventional cloud workloads. Chief executive Robin Khuda said TOK1 is likely to be the first campus in Japan with a large-scale AI deployment.

Khuda said customers are looking at Japan from a North Asian perspective for geopolitical reasons. He also said deploying AI infrastructure is getting harder in the United States and is already hard in Europe, which he argued makes Asia a beneficiary.

Capital Brief, citing AirTrunk, reported a separate $1 billion green loan for liquid cooling at TOK1 and said the first liquid-cooling capacity is expected to go live in January 2028. Reuters did not publish the loan figure or the 2028 date.

The announcement is an investment commitment, not a customer contract list. No new Japanese government subsidy was attached to Wednesday's statement.
