World number one Jannik Sinner pulled out of the Rolex Shanghai Masters, extending a layoff that began after his Wimbledon title in July.

Jannik Sinner has withdrawn from the Rolex Shanghai Masters, which runs from 7 to 18 October. The world number one has not played since winning Wimbledon in July and has also missed the North American hard-court swing, the US Open and the Beijing ATP 500 because of a knee injury.

Sinner wrote on Instagram that he would not be able to play in Shanghai as he had hoped and apologised to fans there. Reuters and the ATP Tour both quoted that note. He won the Shanghai title in 2024, beating Novak Djokovic in the final.

The field still includes Djokovic, a four-time Shanghai champion, Alexander Zverev, Carlos Alcaraz, Daniil Medvedev, Ben Shelton, Felix Auger-Aliassime and defending champion Valentin Vacherot, Reuters reported.

The ATP said Sinner's 2026 record stands at 44-3 and that he won Masters titles at Indian Wells, Miami, Monte Carlo, Madrid and Rome before Wimbledon. Reuters said his absence could help Zverev's bid to finish the year at number one.

No return date was given in either report.
