Newly appointed captain Thomas Chabot had a goal and an assist, and Michael Amadio also scored. Claude Giroux added two assists. Linus Ullmark stopped 27 shots for Ottawa.
Auston Matthews and Kirill Marchenko scored for Toronto. Sergei Bobrovsky made 26 saves. The Leafs have lost two of their first three games, all at home, Reuters said.
Ottawa defenseman Jake Sanderson did not return after the first period because of an undisclosed injury. No further medical detail was given.
The game was Ottawa's season opener and Toronto's third home game of the young schedule.
