Stephen Halliday scored the tiebreaking goal as the Ottawa Senators beat the Toronto Maple Leafs 3-2 on Saturday night in Ottawa's season opener at Scotiabank Arena.

Stephen Halliday scored the tiebreaking goal midway through the third period on Saturday night and the visiting Ottawa Senators opened their season with a 3-2 win over the Toronto Maple Leafs, Reuters reported.

Newly appointed captain Thomas Chabot had a goal and an assist, and Michael Amadio also scored for Ottawa. Claude Giroux added two assists. Linus Ullmark stopped 27 shots.

Auston Matthews and Kirill Marchenko scored for Toronto, which has lost two of its first three games, all at home. Sergei Bobrovsky made 26 saves.

Toronto tied the game 33 seconds into the second period when Matthews tipped in Morgan Rielly's shot. Marchenko scored on a power play at 7:06 of the second. Ottawa defenseman Jake Sanderson did not return after the first period because of an undisclosed injury.

The same Reuters sports file noted a separate Saturday result, the New York Islanders' 6-0 home-opening win over the New Jersey Devils, which is not part of the Canadian opener.
