Stephen Halliday scored the tiebreaking goal as Ottawa opened its NHL season with a 3-2 win at Toronto.

The Ottawa Senators opened their NHL season with a 3-2 win at the Toronto Maple Leafs on Saturday night, Reuters reported. Stephen Halliday scored the tiebreaking goal midway through the third period.

Newly appointed captain Thomas Chabot had a goal and an assist, and Michael Amadio also scored. Claude Giroux added two assists. Linus Ullmark stopped 27 shots.

Auston Matthews and Kirill Marchenko scored for Toronto, which has lost two of its first three games, all at home. Sergei Bobrovsky made 26 saves.

Toronto tied the game 33 seconds into the second period when Matthews tipped in Morgan Rielly's shot. Marchenko scored on a power play at 7:06 of the second after Giroux was sent off for slashing.

Ottawa defenceman Jake Sanderson did not return after the first period because of an undisclosed injury. Reuters did not report a timetable for his return.
