The International Weightlifting Federation awarded Moscow the 2030 World Championships, the first time an Olympic federation has handed Russia a global event since the 2022 invasion of Ukraine.

Moscow will host the 2030 World Weightlifting Championships, the International Weightlifting Federation announced on October 25, making it the first Olympic federation to award Russia a global event since the country's invasion of Ukraine in 2022.

The federation's Executive Board awarded four championships at once: the 2028 World Youth Championships to Prishtina in Kosovo, the 2028 World Junior Championships to Caracas in Venezuela, the 2029 senior World Championships to Ahmedabad in India, and the 2030 senior edition to Moscow. The 2030 event will also serve as a qualifying competition for the 2032 Olympic Games.

The federation said all the bids received were excellent and that three of the four host countries, Kosovo, Venezuela and India, will stage an IWF world event for the first time. Russian Weightlifting Federation president Aleksandr Vinokurov thanked the federation for its trust on Telegram, saying Russia has the experience and infrastructure to stage top-level competitions, and his federation described the decision as the first by an Olympic federation to bring a top-level official competition back to the country in many years.

The decision follows a gradual reopening for Russian athletes. No world championship in an Olympic sport has been held in Russia since the war began, and the 2025 World Aquatics Championships originally awarded to Kazan were moved to Singapore. In July the International Olympic Committee provisionally lifted its suspension of the Russian Olympic Committee, and the federation confirmed Russian and Belarusian athletes eligible for its events four months before the hosting announcement.

The stakes extend beyond one championships. Moscow last hosted the weightlifting worlds in 1983, and the 2030 award tests whether other Olympic federations follow the IWF's lead or hold the line, with Ukraine's Olympic committee already having appealed the IOC's decision at the Court of Arbitration for Sport. The next marker is how other federations and sponsors respond before qualification for the 2032 Games begins.
