Host Japan passed its Asian Games gold-medal record of 78 on Saturday, Kyodo reported, as the Aichi-Nagoya Games headed toward a scheduled Sunday closing.
Japan surpassed its Asian Games gold-medal record of 78, set in Bangkok 60 years ago, on Saturday, Kyodo News reported. The host tally included titles in sepaktakraw and debutant padel, plus golds in judo and breaking.
The Aichi-Nagoya Games opened on September 19 and were scheduled to close on Sunday, October 4. Kyodo's October 4 digest also noted Japan's women's football side beat North Korea on penalties in the final at Shizuoka Stadium Ecopa on October 2.
The medal record is a host-nation sports result, not a final closing tally. Kyodo did not give a complete gold count beyond saying the old record of 78 had been passed.
A separate Kyodo item said Japan may decide sooner than expected on lifting a ban on fresh US potato imports for uses other than chips. That trade question is not part of this sports event.
North Korea's official agency said a ballistic missile launched on Saturday flew about 1,000 kilometres. That military item is also separate and is not confirmed here beyond Kyodo's summary of KCNA.
