Host Japan moved past its 1966 Asian Games gold-medal record of 78, with the Aichi-Nagoya games due to close on Sunday.

Japan passed its Asian Games gold-medal record on Saturday as the Aichi-Nagoya games moved toward a Sunday close, Kyodo News reported. The previous mark was 78 golds, set in Bangkok 60 years ago.

Kyodo said the host tally was highlighted by titles in sepak takraw and the debut sport padel, along with golds in judo and breaking. A Reuters brief carried in Japan later put the host gold count at 83, a 60-year high.

The games have been staged in Aichi and Nagoya. Kyodo's digest also noted Japan's penalty-shootout win over North Korea in the women's football final at Shizuoka Stadium Ecopa on 2 October.

The record is a host-nation milestone rather than a final medal table. The games were scheduled to close on Sunday, so later events could still change national totals.

Kyodo did not publish a full medal table in the digest item. The reported breach of the 1966 gold record was the figure Japanese outlets led with.
