Harmanpreet Kaur resigned the India women's captaincy in all formats on Tuesday after the 2025 World Cup win and a second Asian Games gold.
Harmanpreet Kaur said on Tuesday she was stepping down as captain of the India women's team in all formats. Reuters and ESPNcricinfo reported the announcement, which she posted on Instagram.
The 37-year-old captained India in five Tests, 51 one-day internationals and 155 Twenty20 internationals. She led the side to its first 50-over World Cup title at home in 2025, two T20 Asian Cup titles and two Asian Games gold medals, the latest last month at the Aichi-Nagoya Games.
ESPNcricinfo said the decision came a day after Kaur, vice-captain Smriti Mandhana and coach Amol Muzumdar met BCCI secretary Devajit Saikia in Guwahati. She wrote that the choice was not easy and that she was leaving the captaincy with the team in a good place.
She said she had given the role her time and, at times, part of her own game, and that she intended to keep playing. Indian media linked the timing to the board discussion on the team's roadmap. No successor had been named in the Reuters or ESPNcricinfo reports.
The board's next step is to appoint a captain before the team's following international assignments. Kaur remains available as a player.
