Guwahati, India

Harmanpreet Kaur resigned the India women's captaincy across Tests, ODIs and T20Is on Tuesday, a day after meeting BCCI officials in Guwahati. Smriti Mandhana is expected to succeed her.

Harmanpreet Kaur stepped down as captain of the India women's team in all three international formats on Tuesday, announcing the decision in an Instagram post.

The 37-year-old led India in five Tests, 51 ODIs and 155 T20Is, according to ESPNcricinfo. She captained the side to its first women's global title at the 2025 ODI World Cup and to a second successive Asian Games gold, against Sri Lanka in Nisshin on 22 September.

She wrote that she was leaving the captaincy with a full heart and with peace, because she believed the team was in a good place, and that she was ready to play for the love of the game again.

The announcement followed a meeting on Monday in Guwahati with vice-captain Smriti Mandhana, head coach Amol Muzumdar and BCCI secretary Devajit Saikia. India exited the T20 World Cup at the group stage in June. BBC Sport said Mandhana, 30, is expected to take over, with Zimbabwe due for three T20s and three ODIs from 16 October.

A successor had not been formally named by the board at the time of the ESPNcricinfo and BBC reports.
