American John Catlin won the Hong Kong Open by five shots with a closing 64, earning his first Masters invitation and a place at the 2027 Open at St Andrews.
John Catlin won the Hong Kong Open on Sunday by five shots, closing with a six-under-par 64 to finish 20 under and earn the two invitations that had eluded him across a globe-trotting career: a first Masters appearance and a return to the Open Championship.
The 35-year-old American began the final round sharing the lead with three other players at Hong Kong Golf Club in Fanling, then made seven birdies against a single bogey, at the par-three fifth, to turn a crowded contest into a runaway. Home player Matthew Cheung and Finland's Kalle Samooja tied for second at 15 under, with Cheung's finish the best ever by a Hong Kong player at the tournament.
The victory, Catlin's seventh on the Asian Tour and his first on the tour since April 2024, carried a winner's cheque of 360,000 dollars from a 2 million dollar prize fund. More important to Catlin was the pathway it opened: under the alignment between Augusta National and the R and A, winners of six select national opens earn places in the 2027 Masters and the 2027 Open at St Andrews. 'It's like a dream come true,' Catlin said. 'I remember when I was five, seven, 10 years old, practicing, hitting putts to win the Masters.'
Reuters, GOLF.com and SuperSport agree on the score, the margin and the invitations, and on Cheung's record home finish. Catlin's route to this point ran from PGA Tour Canada and the Asian Development Tour to Asian Tour player of the year honours, three DP World Tour wins in 2020 and 2021, and fill-in appearances on LIV Golf in each of the past three seasons, a journey he described as years of holding faith when he was not sure what was coming.
The stakes for Catlin are personal and immediate: a debut at Augusta National next April and a return to the Open, where he has played four times before, now at St Andrews. For the Asian Tour, a flagship event that produced a first-time Masters qualifier and a record home result is the kind of week that supports its case as a route to the majors. Catlin's next test is simply the one he has waited for, on Magnolia Lane.
