The Olympic Council of Asia closed the Aichi-Nagoya Asian Games on Sunday and handed the next edition to Doha. China led the medal table; host Japan was second and India fourth with 85 medals.
The 20th Asian Games in Aichi-Nagoya closed on Sunday, 4 October 2026, after more than two weeks of competition. Olympic Council of Asia president Sheikh Joaan bin Hamad Al Thani declared the Games closed at Mizuho Park Athletic Stadium and formally passed the baton to Doha, host of the 2030 edition, India Today reported.
China finished first for a 12th consecutive Games with 341 medals, including 169 gold, India Today reported. Host Japan was second with 269 medals, including 83 gold. South Korea was third with 150 medals, including 39 gold.
India finished fourth with 85 medals — 21 gold, 27 silver and 37 bronze. That was 21 medals fewer than its 106-medal haul in Hangzhou, where it also finished fourth, India Today said. Sportstar reported the same 85-medal total and noted Neeru Dhanda as India's flag-bearer at the closing.
Sportstar said Indian boxing produced three gold medals, through Lovlina Borgohain, Parveen Hooda and Ankush, while Sujeet and Aman Sehrawat won wrestling golds. The men's hockey team beat Malaysia 5-1 to retain gold, national coverage reported. Athletics and shooting yielded fewer golds than in Hangzhou.
The closing ends Japan's hosting role and sets Doha as the next Asian Games city. India's smaller haul, after a reduced contingent, is already being discussed in Indian sports coverage as a planning issue ahead of the country's longer Olympic ambitions.
