President Volodymyr Zelenskiy said Russian missiles and drones killed at least 25 people on Wednesday and 100 were injured. He said 19 of the dead, including five children, were in Pryluky after a missile hit a residential building. The interior minister later put the toll at 28.
Russia hit Ukraine with missiles and drones on Wednesday in what President Volodymyr Zelenskiy called one of the most vile strikes of the war, Reuters reported from Kyiv.
Zelenskiy said at least 25 people were killed and 100 injured. The heaviest toll was in Pryluky, in the northern Chernihiv region, where he said a missile destroyed a five-storey residential building and 19 people died, including five children. Interior Minister Ivan Vyhivskyi later put the national death toll at 28.
Zelenskiy said the attacks coincided with Russian President Vladimir Putin's birthday and called the killings the kind of present Putin gave himself. He said ballistic missiles remain the biggest challenge, while Ukraine reported more interceptions of drones. Russia said its forces hit military-industrial sites, Reuters reported.
The strikes also damaged industrial facilities and energy infrastructure, according to the same account. Reuters did not publish a full city-by-city casualty list beyond the Pryluky figures given by the president.
The two official Ukrainian tolls differ. This report uses both attributions and does not treat either number as independently verified.
