Vice President JD Vance told Reuters Iran must make a meaningful cut in enrichment capacity, not only promise future drawdowns. He said Washington is talking with President Pezeshkian and Foreign Minister Araqchi.

Vice President JD Vance said Iran must make a meaningful reduction in nuclear enrichment capacity to satisfy US demands and end the seven-month war, in a Reuters interview published Tuesday. He spoke in Fairbanks, Alaska, after a campaign trip.

Vance said an agreement would require Iran to reduce enrichment capacity rather than offer assurances of future drawdowns. He asked why Iran would need 60 percent enriched fuel if it did not want a nuclear weapon, and said not building highly enriched fuel was a basic threshold.

He said the United States is in talks with President Masoud Pezeshkian and Foreign Minister Abbas Araqchi, and that Washington is unsure how Tehran makes decisions in the negotiations. Iran and the US have exchanged proposals in recent weeks aimed at ending the war and reopening the Strait of Hormuz. Trump rejected Tehran's latest offer and has warned military operations could intensify after the midterms, Reuters reported.

Vance said the US remained open to an agreement but would not trade words for actions. He also said he has not decided whether to pursue a White House run.

No signed nuclear term sheet was released with the interview. The stated US condition is a cut in enrichment capacity, not a completed deal.
