The USS Theodore Roosevelt, which left San Diego on Sept. 27, was again described on Oct. 6 as heading toward the Middle East to sustain U.S. naval operations tied to the war with Iran.

U.S. outlets on Tuesday again described the USS Theodore Roosevelt carrier strike group as en route to the Middle East, where it is expected to relieve the Japan-based USS George Washington. Stars and Stripes reported on Sept. 28 that the carrier left San Diego on Sept. 27 for a deployment expected to last more than seven months.

Army Recognition, citing U.S. defense material, said Carrier Air Wing 11 deployed with the ship and that the rotation is meant to keep carrier-based strike and air-defense capacity near the Gulf of Oman and the approaches to the Strait of Hormuz.

The deployment sits inside a wider U.S. war with Iran. President Donald Trump has both weighed further strikes and, according to WORLD Radio's Oct. 6 bulletin, predicted a deal with Iran after next month's U.S. midterm elections.

The Navy said in late September that the strike group was conducting routine operations in the U.S. 3rd Fleet area while crossing the Pacific. No public arrival date in the Central Command region had been posted by Tuesday afternoon UTC.

A third carrier presence would not by itself reopen the Strait of Hormuz. Shipping groups have separately warned that fertilizer and grain markets remain exposed while the strait is disrupted.
