Governor Bill Lee said Commissioner Frank Strada will step down later this month after Christa Pike survived two doses of pentobarbital in a failed execution. Remaining executions this year are paused.

Tennessee Department of Correction Commissioner Frank Strada will step down later this month, Governor Bill Lee announced on Saturday, after the failed execution of Christa Pike. The New York Times reported that Strada oversaw a process that left Pike unconscious and hospitalized, and that an independent review has begun.

Pike survived two doses of pentobarbital on Wednesday, the Times reported. Her lawyers said in court filings that as of Thursday evening she was unconscious and on a ventilator, with burns and blisters on both arms. The Tennessean reported that Lee called the outcome deeply disturbing and ordered a third-party investigation.

Strada said resigning was in the best interest of Tennesseans while the review proceeds. He said he still believed the department had followed the lethal-injection protocol and that he would cooperate. Lee thanked him and said he appreciated Strada putting the interests of Tennesseans first.

It was the second failed execution attempt under Strada in 2026. In May the attempted execution of Tony Carruthers was called off after the team could not set the needed IV lines, The Tennessean reported. Lee canceled the execution of Gary Wayne Sutton that had been set for December 3.

All remaining executions in the state this year have been paused, the Times reported. Pike's attorneys said the problems in Tennessee's capital-punishment system are not solved by the commissioner's resignation.
