Guy Parmelin arrived for an October 5-7 state visit hosted by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, with trade, technology and the India-EFTA pact on the agenda.

Swiss President Guy Parmelin began a three-day state visit to India on Monday at the invitation of Prime Minister Narendra Modi. Open Magazine reported the visit runs from 5 to 7 October and is Parmelin's first state visit to India, after he attended the AI Impact Summit in New Delhi in February.

Talks scheduled for Monday were set to cover trade and investment, science and technology, mobility, culture and people-to-people ties. External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar was also due to call on the Swiss president. A business delegation travelled with him.

Parmelin is expected to take part in the second India-EFTA Prosperity Summit on 7 October, around a year after the India-EFTA trade arrangement. The opening accounts of the visit did not include a signed communique.

Indian outlets listed the trip among Monday's main diplomatic items. No public disagreement between the two governments was reported as the programme began.

The schedule places economic cooperation alongside formal calls in New Delhi. Any further announcements were expected around the summit later in the week.
