Seoul, South Korea

The presidential office said South Korea's first hypersonic glide vehicle separated from its booster and followed its planned path, with President Lee Jae Myung watching.

South Korea successfully test-launched its first hypersonic glide vehicle on Thursday, with President Lee Jae Myung observing, the presidential office said. Spokesperson Kang Yu-jung described the test as a check of core technologies, including flight path and speed, for a system still under development.

An HGV is boosted into the upper atmosphere, then separates and glides at lower altitude at hypersonic speed. Kang said the vehicle separated from its booster and followed its planned path. The launch also tested heat protection, guidance and control, and low-altitude maneuvering.

Unlike a conventional ballistic missile, the vehicle descended after separation, adjusted course horizontally and vertically, and hit the target, Kang said. Yonhap did not publish the launch site, range or speed.

After the test, Lee praised the development team and said national security should be protected through the country's own strength. Kang quoted him as saying the government will fully support development and deployment of advanced weapons so people can live without concern.

The account comes from the presidential office, carried by Yonhap. No independent tracking data were included in the report.
