Foreign ministers Cho Hyun and Anita Anand agreed by phone to expand practical cooperation under a security partnership signed in 2025, Seoul's foreign ministry said.
South Korean Foreign Minister Cho Hyun and Canadian Foreign Minister Anita Anand agreed on Wednesday to expand cooperation in defence, energy and artificial intelligence, Yonhap reported, citing Seoul's foreign ministry. The talks were by telephone.
They agreed to expand practical cooperation in defence and the arms industry under the bilateral Security and Defense Cooperation Partnership. That partnership was established in October 2025 after a summit in Gyeongju and was Canada's first such partnership with an Indo-Pacific country, the ministry said.
The ministers also agreed to discuss advanced technologies, including AI, at a joint science and technology committee due in Seoul next month. They pledged to keep working on stable energy supplies and critical-mineral supply chains. Yonhap said South Korea's imports of Canadian crude and liquefied natural gas have increased recently.
Cho asked Ottawa to keep supporting South Korean companies investing in Canada, including in batteries and advanced materials. The ministry said the ministers also discussed the Middle East and agreed to keep working on peace and stability on the Korean Peninsula.
The item is assigned to South Korea because the published account is the Seoul ministry readout. No Canadian transcript was checked for this hour. No new treaty was signed.
