The Makkah Alliance defence committee met in Riyadh, named retired Pakistani lieutenant general Nauman Mahmood as secretary-general and said agreed forces would be readied for deployment in Saudi Arabia.

Saudi Arabia, Pakistan and Turkey held an emergency meeting of the Strategic-Political and Defense Committee of the Makkah Alliance for Defense in Riyadh on Monday, the Saudi Press Agency said.

The committee appointed Lieutenant General Nauman Mahmood, retired, of Pakistan as the first secretary-general for a three-year term. The parties said they wanted the post to advance the alliance.

They condemned attempted targeting of Makkah and Madinah and continuing attacks on cities and civilian and economic facilities in the kingdom. The SPA statement said the committee would move to implement collective-defence commitments and take measures to provide agreed military forces for rapid deployment in Saudi Arabia, under national legislation of the parties.

Turkey's foreign ministry had said on Sunday that Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan, Defence Minister Yasar Guler and chief of the general staff General Selcuk Bayraktaroglu would attend.

The meeting was also expected to discuss Yemen after the Saudi-backed government announced an offensive against the Houthis. The SPA text did not publish a troop number.
