Justice Alexandre de Moraes ordered former deputy Eduardo Bolsonaro to start a four-year, two-month sentence and cancelled his passport. Bolsonaro, who lives in the United States, called the order arbitrary.

Justice Alexandre de Moraes of Brazil's Supreme Federal Court ordered former deputy Eduardo Bolsonaro to begin serving a sentence of four years and two months, Reuters reported on Thursday after seeing the order. The initial regime is semi-open. Moraes also ordered an arrest warrant and cancellation of Bolsonaro's passport.

G1 reported that the decision was signed on Wednesday and that the conviction became final on 3 October, with the court's secretariat certifying that on 5 October. The First Panel convicted Bolsonaro unanimously in June of coercion in the course of proceedings, tied to efforts to influence the case against his father, former president Jair Bolsonaro.

Eduardo Bolsonaro has lived in the United States since early last year. In a statement quoted by Reuters he called the order arbitrary, untimely and useless, saying the United States had made clear it would not carry out decisions of that kind. He said the only practical effect, taken during an election period, was to raise tensions in Brazil.

The order moves the case from a final conviction to execution of the sentence. It does not by itself place him in a Brazilian prison while he remains abroad.

Reuters and G1 both attributed the passport cancellation and arrest warrant to Moraes. Neither report said a foreign government had agreed to act on the warrant.
