On President Claudia Sheinbaum's instruction, the foreign ministry offered Governor Mauricio Kuri formal accompaniment after he thanked the US ambassador for a police academy in Queretaro. Foreign security deals need a federal review.

Mexico's foreign ministry said on Tuesday that, on President Claudia Sheinbaum's instruction, Foreign Secretary Roberto Velasco Alvarez spoke with Queretaro Governor Mauricio Kuri and offered the ministry's help with a planned police academy linked to the United States.

CNN en Espanol reported that Kuri, of the opposition National Action Party, thanked US Ambassador Ronald Johnson and said the state had been chosen for an international academy he described as the only one of its kind in Latin America. A related message said the academy would strengthen exchanges between Mexican and US security institutions.

The foreign ministry said agreements with foreign governments or agencies cannot be set up without approval from an auxiliary integrity-review body required by law. It said the ministry is accompanying the process to obtain that clearance, and that Velasco sent Kuri a letter offering institutional coordination.

The dispute sits inside a longer argument between the Sheinbaum and Trump administrations over organized crime, drug use and gun trafficking, CNN reported. No signed cooperation agreement was published in the account.

The academy has not opened. The next formal step described by the ministry is the federal review required before any foreign security deal.
