Chancellor Friedrich Merz promised Ukraine 1 billion euros in military aid and 350 million euros for the energy sector during an unannounced visit to Kyiv.
German Chancellor Friedrich Merz pledged a further military-aid package worth 1 billion euros and 350 million euros for Ukraine's energy sector during a surprise visit to Kyiv, tagesschau reported on Sunday. Economy minister Katherina Reiche and a business delegation traveled with him.
Merz said Germany would not ease its support. President Volodymyr Zelenskyy thanked Germany as Ukraine's largest backer and thanked Merz personally, the public broadcaster reported. Russian attacks continued during the visit.
The military package centers on a deal to jointly produce interceptor drones against jet-powered drones, missiles with a range of more than 1,000 kilometers, and satellite technology to help Ukrainian forces with targeting, Merz said. Zelenskyy said 15 agreements would be signed during the visit, including on attack drones and missiles.
Merz argued the assistance would also benefit Germany and Europe through new defense projects and a transfer of knowledge. The energy funds are aimed at a power system that tagesschau described as under repeated Russian bombardment.
The report did not list delivery dates for the new weapons projects. The pledge is an announcement of funding and cooperation, not confirmation that the systems have already reached Ukrainian units.
