Kyiv, Germany

German Chancellor Friedrich Merz arrived in Kyiv as Russian drones struck the Pivnichnyi Bridge for a second day, injuring two people, Mayor Vitali Klitschko said.

Major bridges in Kyiv have been hit by Russian drone strikes for four consecutive days, the BBC reported on Sunday. Two people were injured when the Pivnichnyi, or Northern, Bridge was struck on Sunday morning for the second day in a row, Mayor Vitali Klitschko said. The Pivdennyi, or Southern, Bridge was hit several times earlier in the week.

The latest strike came as German Chancellor Friedrich Merz made a surprise visit to Kyiv. Russia's military said it would intensify strikes on Kyiv and other regions and said it had hit two bridges used to transfer Ukrainian troops, the BBC reported. The BBC said it verified video of a drone hitting the Northern Bridge and exploding.

RFE/RL reported that Merz was expected to announce a military aid package that would reportedly include interceptors able to hit Russian jet-powered drones. He visited the National Academy of Sciences in Kyiv, damaged in an earlier drone attack, with President Volodymyr Zelenskyy.

Merz said an attack on the academy, a few hundred meters from the German embassy, and a Sunday morning air-raid alarm were daily war crimes. He was accompanied by Economy Minister Katherina Reiche and 10 business leaders from defense and energy, RFE/RL reported. The visit followed a Russian warning that foreign nationals, including diplomats, faced mortal danger in Ukraine.

The New York Times, reporting Saturday, said traffic had already been restricted or stopped on five of the capital's six road bridges after earlier strikes. Sunday's injury count came from Klitschko via the BBC.

People Sentiments Negative

  • Klitschko said the enemy is destroying Kyiv and that peacetime routines are no longer possible, the New York Times reported from his Friday post.
  • Merz called the strikes daily war crimes, RFE/RL reported.
