The House passed an employment protection bill on Tuesday after a 2024 court order to separate labour rules from the Job Creation Law. The government called it a gift to workers. The final text was not yet public.

Indonesia's House of Representatives passed an employment protection law in a plenary session on Tuesday, less than two months after lawmakers initiated the bill, The Jakarta Post reported. The vote follows a Constitutional Court ruling in October 2024 that ordered a labour statute separate from the Job Creation Law within two years.

Manpower Minister Yassierli told the session the law harmonised standards that had been scattered and strengthened protections. After the vote, House Deputy Speaker Sufmi Dasco told unions outside the building that President Prabowo Subianto and the government had kept a promise. He called the law a gift for workers. The Star, citing Detik, carried the same remark.

The circulating bill, which the Post said was not yet the published text, would require severance, long-service awards and compensation for entitlements, and would limit outsourcing to five support categories: cleaning, catering, security, mining and oil support, and worker transport.

Unions had rallied on Jalan Gatot Subroto calling for passage. The government had aimed to finish the bill before the end of October.

The statute is passed. Implementing rules and the official text were not in the accounts used here.
