Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Swiss President Guy Parmelin oversaw agreements on migration, young professionals, and cooperation in defence and nuclear energy during Parmelin's visit to New Delhi.

India and Switzerland signed agreements on migration and youth mobility and said they would deepen cooperation on defence and nuclear energy as Prime Minister Narendra Modi met Swiss President Guy Parmelin in New Delhi on Monday.

Modi said the two sides had identified possibilities for military exchanges and defence production and had reached a consensus on further nuclear-energy collaboration. He said the Migration and Mobility Partnership Agreement and the Young Professionals Agreement would open opportunities in Switzerland for Indian students, researchers, professionals and young people.

The Indian Express, citing the external affairs ministry, reported that the mobility pact provides multiple-entry visas of up to five years, stays of up to six months on each visit, and renewable one-year student permits.

The young-professionals agreement covers an exchange of 300 people a year from each country, with scope to rise to 500. Nationality and residency checks are to be completed in 30 to 90 days, the paper reported.

The talks were part of a three-day state visit. Organiser, citing the MEA, said six agreements were signed, including infrastructure, research and technology, and that both sides backed an existing EFTA investment pledge aimed at jobs in India. Those investment figures were not restated in the Indian Express account used here as the primary write-up.
