New Delhi, India

Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Swiss President Guy Parmelin said the two sides identified cooperation in defence and nuclear energy and signed agreements on migration and young professionals.

India and Switzerland identified new cooperation in defence production and nuclear energy during Swiss President Guy Parmelin's visit to New Delhi, Prime Minister Narendra Modi said after talks on Monday.

The Hindu reported that the two sides signed five agreements, including memorandums and letters of intent. A migration and mobility partnership provides for multiple-entry visas of up to five years, stays of up to six months on each visit, and renewable one-year student permits, the Ministry of External Affairs said. A separate agreement covers temporary work placements for young professionals.

The Swiss government said Parmelin met President Droupadi Murmu, Modi and other ministers on 5 October. Its account said two agreements were concluded, one on migration and one on training exchanges. Bern said the migration pact also covers readmission and cooperation against irregular migration, trafficking and document fraud.

Parmelin's trip marked the first anniversary of the Trade and Economic Partnership Agreement between India and the European Free Trade Association, which took effect on 1 October 2025, The Hindu reported. The Swiss statement said talks on a bilateral investment protection agreement are advanced and that intellectual-property talks continue.

Modi said the sides had identified military exchanges and defence production as new areas and agreed to deepen nuclear-energy cooperation. Neither government announced a signed defence or nuclear treaty on Monday.
