Each side summoned the other's charge d'affaires after Border Security Force troops shot dead two men India called infiltrators and Pakistan called unarmed civilians near Tarn Taran.
India on Saturday summoned Pakistan's charge d'affaires, Saad Warraich, to protest what the Ministry of External Affairs called continued facilitation of illegal cross-border infiltration, PTI reported. The summons followed Pakistan's own call-in of India's charge d'affaires in Islamabad over the killing of two men along the Punjab frontier.
Border Security Force troops shot the two men on Friday near the international border in Tarn Taran district after warnings to turn back, Indian officials said. News18, citing a BSF account, said the men were advancing toward the Indian side and provoking troops. The Hindu reported that Pakistan's foreign ministry described the dead as unarmed civilians and protested the use of lethal force.
India's MEA rejected those allegations as baseless. PTI quoted the ministry saying three individuals had crossed into Indian territory in the Ferozepur sector on 2 October and kept moving toward the fence despite warnings. New Delhi asked Pakistan to investigate infiltration and drug smuggling and to control movement from its side of the border.
The two accounts conflict on whether the dead were armed infiltrators or civilians. Neither government has published an independent forensic account in the reports reviewed. The Hindu said both capitals summoned diplomats and traded charges.
No further operational update was issued by either side in the Sunday reports. The incident adds a fresh diplomatic dispute to an already tense Punjab border sector.
