Transitional Prime Minister Ilidio Vieira Te said conditions are not in place for the 6 December vote because party bodies have expired and the candidacy deadline passed.
Guinea-Bissau's transitional prime minister, Ilidio Vieira Te, said the presidential and parliamentary elections set for 6 December cannot be held because the conditions are not in place, African Initiative reported, citing the ANG news agency. He spoke after a meeting with transitional president Horta N'Tam.
Vieira Te said the terms of many party governing bodies have expired and must be renewed, and that the statutory deadline for candidacies passed on 6 October. He said the country will wait for a statement from the head of state. No new date was announced.
Business Insider Africa reported that electoral-commission spokesperson Felisberta Moura Vaz told Deutsche Welle the missed deadlines made the timetable technically impossible. The commission's comment is a separate official view of the calendar, not a court ruling.
Transitional authorities had scheduled the vote for 6 December in January. Senegal's foreign ministry called on the military authorities to open a dialogue with political and civil-society groups on a return to constitutional order, African Initiative said.
The reports establish a stated postponement, not a replacement date. Guinea-Bissau is outside the country list used for this brief, so the row is filed as World.
