Senator Flavio Bolsonaro finished first and President Lula second in Brazil's 4 October presidential vote. They meet in a runoff on 25 October.

Senator Flavio Bolsonaro and President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva finished first and second in Brazil's presidential first round on Sunday and will meet in a runoff on 25 October, the Washington Post reported. Neither passed 50 percent of valid votes.

The Rio Times, citing radio and electoral-court reporting, said the count was about 56 million votes for Bolsonaro and about 54 million for Lula. It also cited a Reuters tally at 99.95 percent counted of 47.04 percent and 45.15 percent of valid votes. About 158 million citizens were registered.

Lula, 80, is seeking another term after defeating Flavio's father, Jair Bolsonaro, in 2022 by a narrow margin. Jair Bolsonaro disputed that result, and supporters later stormed government buildings in Brasilia. Flavio Bolsonaro ran for the Liberal Party.

The three-week campaign turns on where voters for eliminated candidates go. Foreign residents cannot vote, and no residency rule change was announced with the result.

The Superior Electoral Court set the runoff for Sunday 25 October. Markets and the currency are expected to track the shorter campaign, though no official market figure is included here.

People Sentiments Mixed

  • Washington Post described celebrations by Flavio Bolsonaro supporters as partial results came in.
