Three EU diplomats said ambassadors approved 1646 new designations mostly tied to Russia's military industry including ballistic-missile production. Formal adoption is set for a foreign ministers meeting on Monday.

European Union envoys approved 1646 new designations under the bloc's Russia sanctions regime on Wednesday three EU diplomats told Reuters. Most of the names are tied to Russia's military industrial complex. More than half are involved in the production chain for ballistic missiles such as the 9M723 Iskander-M.

One source said the list covers missile testing and research solid fuels and rocket engines and producers of specialised textiles and fibres used in missile systems. It also includes drone manufacturers shipyards that service submarines and 77 Russian politicians who ran for seats in Russian-occupied Ukrainian territories.

Reuters said Ukraine has virtually run out of Patriot interceptors as the US military diverts resources to the Gulf and that Russia has increased ballistic strikes. The EU also added seven North Korean entities and individuals linked to Moscow's war effort.

The listings still need formal adoption when EU foreign ministers meet on Monday. President Vladimir Putin said last week that Moscow would not resume diesel exports until sanctions are lifted. The approval is an envoy decision reported by diplomats not the published legal act.
