Polling stations opened at 2 p.m. Friday for municipal elections and the first round of Senate elections, with voting continuing on Saturday. Twenty-seven Senate seats are in play.

Voters in Czechia began casting ballots on Friday in municipal elections and the first round of elections for one-third of the Senate, Radio Prague International reported. Polling stations opened at 2 p.m. and were due to close at 10 p.m., then reopen on Saturday from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m.

Nearly 190,000 candidates are competing for about 62,000 seats on local councils, and 154 candidates are contesting 27 Senate seats, the station said. Results from smaller municipalities are expected on Saturday evening. Complete results may not be ready until early Sunday. The second round of Senate voting is set for next weekend.

The Czech foreign ministry said the president called the Senate election in a decision published as 117/2026 and fixed the days as 9 and 10 October, with a possible second round on 16 and 17 October. Voting for the Senate is held only inside Czechia, not at embassies abroad.

Wikipedia's current-events portal, citing the Associated Press, said incumbent prime minister Andrej Babis is seeking gains for his coalition in the Senate. Radio Prague did not report early turnout.

Czechia is outside this brief's country list, so the row is filed as World. No result is included because the count had not been reported.
