Prime Minister Mark Carney's office said he will visit Ankara and Istanbul from 21 to 23 October to meet President Erdogan, the first dedicated bilateral trip to Turkey by a Canadian leader.

Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney will travel to Ankara and Istanbul from 21 to 23 October, his office said on Tuesday, in what it described as the first dedicated bilateral visit to NATO ally Turkey by a Canadian leader.

Carney will meet President Tayyip Erdogan in Ankara. The Prime Minister's Office said the talks would cover energy and mining, climate, and defence and security. In Istanbul he is due to meet Turkish business leaders and investors and to present Canada as a destination for trade and investment.

The office said he would stress energy, aerospace, advanced technologies, and mining and critical minerals. Reuters noted that Carney and Erdogan formally opened free-trade negotiations at the NATO leaders' summit in July, and that Turkey has agreed to join Canada's Defence Security and Resilience Bank as one of 10 founding members.

Reuters said the trip fits Carney's effort to reduce reliance on the United States after trade talks collapsed in August. No new agreement was signed with the announcement.

The visit itself is the next dated step. No joint statement or deal text was released on Tuesday.
